How It Started

My name is Marton Horvath. I live in Budapest and have spent most of my adult life here, working in logistics and spending weekends looking for reasons to leave the city. In the spring of 2019, a friend convinced me to try camping at a small site near Eger, in the foothills of the Bukk Mountains. I borrowed a tent, packed badly, and slept terribly. But I woke up to a view of forested hills and morning fog in the valley below, and something about that experience stayed with me.

Within a few months I had bought my own gear and started visiting campsites across Hungary. I quickly discovered that while there is plenty of general travel content about Hungary online, practical camping information in English was hard to find. The official tourism sites mention a few popular spots, but they rarely cover the details that actually matter when you are standing in a field trying to figure out where to pitch your tent.

What This Site Covers

Livitesasys focuses on three core areas. The first is camping gear suited to Hungarian conditions, including the specific challenges of hot continental summers and unpredictable shoulder-season weather. The second is a guide to the best campsites I have visited across the country, from the lakeside spots at Balaton to the quieter mountain sites in the Northern Uplands. The third covers outdoor safety and practical tips, including regulations around wild camping, wildlife awareness, and how to handle the logistics of a camping trip in Hungary.

Everything here is written for people who want straightforward, useful information rather than marketing language. I aim to cover what guidebooks and tourism websites leave out.

How the Guides Are Written

I only write about places I have personally visited and gear I have personally used. When I recommend a campsite, it is because I have slept there, used the facilities, and formed an honest impression. When I discuss equipment, it reflects what I actually carry in my pack rather than what looks good in a product listing. I revisit sites and update the guides regularly, because conditions change. A campsite that was excellent two years ago may have deteriorated, and new options open every season. The dates on each article reflect the last meaningful update.

I do not accept sponsored gear, paid placements, or promotional partnerships. The assessments on this site are independent.
