Why Hungary Works So Well for Camping

Hungary is not the first country that comes to mind when people think about camping in Europe. That is part of its appeal. While the Austrian Alps and Croatian coast draw enormous crowds every summer, Hungary offers a quieter alternative with genuine variety in its landscapes.

I started camping here in 2019, originally drawn by the low costs and the proximity to Budapest. What kept me coming back was the range of experiences available within a relatively small country. Within a few hours of the capital you can camp beside a thermal lake, set up in an ancient beech forest, or pitch your tent on the open grasslands of the Great Plain.

These guides are based on trips I have taken personally. The information reflects what I actually found on the ground, including the details that official tourism websites tend to gloss over.

Before You Head Out

Getting to Your Campsite

Hungary has a reliable public transport network, but most campsites are easier to reach by car. MAV Hungarian Railways connects Budapest to all major regions, and local buses cover the last stretch to many national parks. Car rental from Budapest is affordable and gives the most flexibility.

When to Camp

The core camping season runs from May to September. June and early September offer the best balance of warm weather and fewer visitors. July and August bring peak heat on the Great Plain, often above 35 degrees. Spring and autumn camping is possible with the right gear, especially in the southern regions.

Costs and Supplies

Campsite fees in Hungary remain considerably lower than in Western Europe. Basic groceries and camping gas are readily available in towns near popular sites. Larger supermarket chains like Spar and Lidl are found even in smaller towns, and most accept card payments.
